Star Spangled Banner

August 24th, 1814, Washington D.C.: The capitol buildings of the United States of America burned so brightly that the citizens of Baltimore 40 miles away could see them. In horror they watched the city burn, and knew the British would come there next.

UpLifts – Thoughts Are Things!

— Marian Anderson

Do not take thought for your persons or your properties, but first and chiefly to care about the greatest improvement of the soul. — Socrates

Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. — John F. Kennedy

UpLifts – Happy Father’s Day

A Father’s Prayer
General Douglas MacArthur

I don’t believe there is a day that goes by but what I am reminded, as a father, of the great, awesome, and inescapable responsibility it is to be a father. I am keenly aware that I will be held strictly accountable for my actions in relation to my family. Therefore, it is my constant prayer that my children will cherish what I cherish, and serve as I have tried to serve. I don’t believe that I’m alone as a father in such sentiments. Years ago these lines were penned by General Douglas MacArthur. They are classic, and where he refers to son, I would add “daughter” as well. He said:

“Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud of unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.

UpLifts – Honor & Serve Thy Mother (Mother’s Day)

Serve Thy Mother

You know, there are only three known references to Jesus’ direct interactions with His mother after His public ministry began. These references are very enlightening.

The Savior’s ministry has just begun. He returns to Galilee from His baptism at Jordan, and His temptation experience in the Judean wilderness. He comes with His disciples to a wedding feast at Cana. It may well have been a member of His family getting married since it was Mary who was in charge of the feast — we really don’t know. But during the course of the festivities, they run out of wine. Mary comes to Jesus in her need and says to her son, “… They have no wine.” (John 2:3)

UpLifts – A Brain, A Heart, And Courage To Guide Us

Pressure and stress are unavoidable facts of life. It is how we handle them
that makes them positive or negative. When the heat is on, do we see it as
a refiner’s fire or just let it burn us out?

In the movie “The Wizard of Oz?” Dorothy found herself traveling a
road that led through an unfamiliar world. She encountered many challenges
and problems, but she also found three friends to share the journey and
help her find her way home -a Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and a Lion. The youth of today are in much the same situation as Dorothy. Trying to
follow a straight and narrow path through a world filled with opposition
and “wicked witches.”
